October Wrap Up & The Sunday Post! (#128)

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer
It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Now that's explained, it's on to my weekly recap!

Halò, a h-uile duine!
How are you all doing? It's been ages again... Sorry. Life has thoroughly kicked my ass, anxiety has been high, motivation low and yeah... We'll get there, right?

Let's see, it was around this time in October I last posted an update.
October was an interesting month in that it was all boring and routine until half-term break where we got to go out and do some fun stuff, and just in time too as, on Halloween, the UK's Prime Minister put England back into lockdown. It's not quite as strict as the first lockdown but all non-essential businesses are closed again, households aren't really allowed to mingle (some exceptions), and we're back to WFH if we can.
I'm now only in office one day a week for the "essential" bits I can't do from home and WFH the rest of the time, same with the professor. Unlike last time, the schools are still open so the little dude is happy. It's super frustrating as my neck of the woods is massively lower than other parts but we're all in it together or some such... yay?

So, for (the pre-lockdown) half-term fun, we went to the Harry Potter Studio Tour and it was wonderful! They've completely overhauled it since we last visited about 7/8 years ago so it was well worth a second visit with the little dude.
We went on a spooky scavenger hunt at Old Sarum Castle, we took advantage of a bowling promotion to get another game in, and we spent the day at Winchester Science Centre which has only just reopened for the first time since March! They'd completely overhauled their exhibits and it was a great day.
I loved having the week off... It was my first full week off since last Christmas. I'd taken lots of days off throughout the summer so that each week was only a three-day working week (and I love doing that) but there'd been no complete breaks in almost a year! No wonder I was feeling so frazzled.
I also managed to get my hair cut! That feels like a massive coup... Especially when it was just before they announced a return to lockdown! I got it cut short (like just above my shoulders) so I should be good for a good long while...

In bad news, my mum tested positive for covid!
We found out on Halloween. She's over a certain age and has four significant underlying health conditions so that was scary... Luckily, she seems to be out the other side of it with no complications.
Also, some idiot drove into the back of our car at a roundabout on Halloween... So, basically, Halloween was a load of balls this year.

October also felt like the month everything went wrong with our house.
Towel rails falling off walls, holes/ cracks appearing in plaster, cat damaging the carpets, stuff breaking. Argh!
Nothing is unfixable (except the cat damage to the carpets) but it's frustrating and annoying.
It's the cat who is sick doing the damage to my carpets and I just wish I knew why she's doing the things she's doing... But aside from a load of vet bills, we've still got nothing. 😖

Finally, it was my birthday this week!
Another year older... I don't know why but this birthday (number 35) has hit me particularly hard, lol.
It's ridiculous but it is true. I think it's the state of the world that's getting to me and my birthday has compounded it but who knows. Shame I'm in lockdown and can't do anything nuts to kick-start an early mid-life crisis...

Oh! And I've started using Feedly to keep up with people's blog posts and it's awesome!!
Bloglovin' was useless for seeing what was going on with you all and was needlessly difficult to comment on your blogs directly (rather than the Bloglovin' platform).
I wasn't visiting as much as I'd like and I was getting frustrated.
I'm confident that Feedly will fix it!
I can catch up easy! I have lists! It shows me new posts! I can check off what I've read...
It is now officially my king.
I'm still slowly working through adding people to it - today/tomorrow I'm creating my "Sunday Posters" list - but it's taking shape and it rules.
Watch this space for the return of some blogging normalcy!
(I hope...)

So many books... Don't judge me. I have an addiction. I cannot resist sales or freebies.
The ARC additions were bursts of exciting madness.

I think the last time I posted, I was on a reading roll and thinking the slump had ended.
I cursed myself. It's been four weeks and I've read 8 books
Four of them are kids books so hardly an achievement... One was a novella!
Oh well. Reading is reading, lol.

Heather talks about Haunted Scotland. (I LOVED this post!)

Half-term, Halloween, fun we got through:
Hocus Pocus, The Adams Family, The Adams Family Values, Halloweentown, Halloweentown 2, Halloweentown High.

With the start of November, it means Festive Movies!!!
So far, I've had Edward Scissorhands and Holidate.

No TV shows really...
Although, the professor watched the final season of Man In The High Castle so I ended up watching a lot of that with him.

October's reading total came in at 13.
Most of them were at the start of the month but it's nice to know I may not be in as big a slump as I feared...

My favourite book was Delivering Evil For Experts by Annette Marie.
My least favourite book was Pablo Can't Sleep or Thrill of The Chase.

Have a great week all!

  1. Sorry to hear about you mom getting covid, but I am overjoyed to hear she is ok. I feel like almost everyone will contract it at some point. We just have to protect our vulnerable. Crazy times. You did so much fun stuff. That's awesome, and good for you being able to get that haircut before they shut down. Winning! I have not had any longer than a one day at a time off this year, since all my travel plans blew up. Glad your time off was so well spent. I spy some good books in your haul too. I liked Boyfriend Material, You Had Me at Hockey, and The Wright Boss. I am looking forward to the new Clayborn book too. Hope you enjoy them all.

  2. Glad you all had some fun outings before the latest lockdown. I *wish* my city/state would lock down again but I don't see it happening. The virus is raging over here and everyone just carries on as if nothing is wrong. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. :( Thank goodness she is doing okay. And it sounds like I need to check out Feedly. I see so many positive comments about it. I just recently bought Happily Letter After. And I adored Boyfriend Material. ♥

  3. Happy belated birthday ! I'm sorry for your mother testing positive, but happily, she's out of the woods. I too broke stuff this week, just a few bottles a half-hour earlier and I spent my time sponging and removing shards of glass before jumping on my computer to continue visiting blogs. Fingers crossed for your cat, I hope they find what it's about. Have a great week and welcome back to lockdown with a lot of us :)

  4. Sorry to hear about your high anxiety and low motivation. I hope you're doing better! That's good the corona numbers are a bit lower where you live at least, but hopefully the partial lockdown will prevent it from spreading more. Our numbers are still going up here and we're back to partial lockdown as well.

You got some great pictures from your visit to the Harry Potter studios! That's good news your mother seems to have gone through Covid without complications. Must've been scary for her to catch it. Sorry your Halloween wasn't a good one with that car driving into yours.

Happy birthday! I hope you still found a way to celebrate. And hopefully feedly will help with the blog following. I used to use bloglovin, but sorta stopped with that when I followed so many blogs I kept missing the posts I wanted to see. Nowadays I often just use the Sunday Post as a chance to visit.

I hope next week is a good one!

  5. I am sorry to hear you are in lockdown again and I am sorry to hear about your mom! I hope she doesn't have any symptoms and gets over it quickly!

I have feedly but have such a hard time adding people. I need to find a way to add more. I never use it but always feel like it would help me keep up with blogs I love and off the social media!

I hope you have a great week, Nicci! Happy Reading!

  6. Sending positive vibes to your mum <3

  7. I wish your mother that she will be well soon. And happy belated birthday. Halloween was a bit low key around here. We are in a partial lockdown now and see how things will go. Stay safe and well.

  8. Glad your mom seems to be okay after COVID. I think medical professionals have made HUGE progress on treatments since the pandemic began and that is just awesome.

  9. First: happy birthday!!!!
Second: I am glad your mom seems to be doing well despite being infected!
Then: booh for your car Nicci.
And last: I don't know how you managed with just some days here and there as holiday! Stay safe my friend.

  10. Wow it really has been one hell of a month for you, too! I am sorry to hear about all the problems around the house, the accident and your mum having Covid. Really pleased she is starting to feel better and that you still managed to have a lovely half-term break with your son. I hope November will be an easier month for you and yoyrs - If nothing else it will be quieter with lockdown! 👋📚🙂

  11. Sorry to hear you mom got Covid, but I'm happy to hear hers seems to be a mild case. It sucks when someone crashes into your car. Such a hassle even if you don't have to pay for anything. I love Science Centers! We've tried to visit ones whenever we've travelled in the past. Especially when our kids were younger. Always something interesting. Nice to hear you enjoyed your visit. Hope you figure out what's up with your kitty!

I loved Heather's Haunted Scotland post, too!

  12. Happy birthday. I'm glad your mom seems to be doing alright.

  13. So sorry to hear about your mother getting Covid, but I'm glad she's doing well. The Harry Potter Studio Tour looks like so much fun. Happy Birthday! I definitely understand about book addictions...I'm like that too. Enjoy the books!

Thank you for your kind words about the loss of my cat. It's greatly appreciated.

I hope you have a great week!

  14. It sounds like your half-term break was amazing. I want to go to the Harry Potter and the Science Museum. I switched to Feedly this summer and I LOVE it. No matter what those around us are doing, we have pretty much staying in lockdown. I'm sorry about you mum but glad she seems to have come through it. And Happy Birthday! 40 hit me somewhat but 50 was the hardest. Wishing you a great week and some good books to read!

  15. I may need to look into feedly. I, too, had a birthday, a couple weeks ago and getting older feels more intense with all this. Hope you are well.

  16. I'm sorry to hear about the lockdown. Things are bad here but America would probably revolt if we had another lockdown lol- everyone is so on edge here lately. I hope things get better there soon!

I'm glad your mom is doing okay, a Covid diagnosis is scary, no question. And happy birthday!!!

Bloglovin has been causing me issues too. I used to like it but not anymore...

  17. Happy Birthday Nicci! ;)

I'm sorry to hear about the lockdown and your mother getting Covid. I'm glad to read she has been doing better though! I can't even imagine how scary that must have been.

The Harry Potter Studio Tour is definitely on my wish list! When the world opens up again, I hope to be able to go one day. :D

Good luck with Feedly! I'll have to check that one out myself.

    Stay safe and happy reading.

  18. Looks like you guys had a lot of fun during your break. Yea for breaks! I also tend to go on spending spree when books are on special and BookBub is soooo not good for that addiction. Especially when I'm a bit more stressed than normal, then I buy like anything. Retail therapy....

Happy birthday! May the next year be wonderful with lots of unexpected blessings.

Have a good week and happy reading!

  19. Scary about your mom! I'm glad it wasn't a severe case.

I'm also in a low case area surrounded by hot zones so it's tough balancing it all. And now it's getting cold and tougher to do things outside.

  20. I hope your mum is ok and makes a quick recovery. Up here in Scotland we are fully expecting a lockdown any minute but whether it comes is another thing.

I use Newsify to keep an eye on blogs I follow, these readers do make life a lot easier, I was never keen on bloglovin.

    Have a lovely November!

  21. So glad to see you back. You have had lots of troubles. Glad your mother came through covid with few difficulties. And happy birthday!

  22. I'm so glad that your mum seemed to get just a mild Covid and I hope she gets back to full health quickly. What a really crap month with that, the car crash and lockdown. We'll be getting lockdown up here very soon (Fishface does love to be different for a week or two before copying Boris anyway!) but I've personally been in lockdown since the start of March!

  23. I am sorry to hear about your mom and hope she continues to do well. I am glad you and your family were able to get out and about for a bit before the lockdown came again. Numbers are rising all over the world again. That's too bad about the car crash too. I hope no one was hurt and any repairs weren't too expensive. How is your cat doing? It's so hard when you don't know what's wrong. :-(

I hope you had a nice birthday! I can't believe it's November already. I hope you have a lovely week. Take care!

  24. Happy to hear you got some great Halloween activities in before the new lockdown. It's my favorite time of year. I love Little Dude's costume! 🎃

Thanks for sharing the kids books. I'm not babysitting right now, but I love keeping up with new releases and I also buy books for Little Free Libraries.

I hope your mom is 100% better by the time you read this. 🤗

    Hang in there. 🌞
