Weekly Update #57

Welcome!
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer
It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Now that's explained, it's on to my weekly recap!

Happy Easter folks!
We're having a lazy one at home and cooking up a big meal. My father-in-law is joining us and we plan on going for a walk in the forest after eating for the weather has been so gorgeous these past few days! I really hope it continues.

This week, I got my Career Level promotion at work!
We're a strange organisation in that you can step up into a role (like I did back in November) but not actually be given the commensurate rank (and pay increase!) until you pass an interview panel for the level (which sits twice a year). If you fail your interview, you can stay in your job, with all the responsibility as long as you're not messing it up, and re-take the level review in a year... Weird, right? Well, the past few weeks, I've been stressed out my face undertaking that process. It all began back in Feb so March was a mess of Level-Review applications and end of FY stress, and then the end of FY stress went away making me feel great until the interview date was set and then everything kicked into high gear again.
I kept it quiet though as I hate to fail, lol. Now I have passed, I'm sharing. 😆
I'm so glad it's over and I was successful!

In other news, my husband got a new car this week.
His car was on its last legs - so to speak - so we urgently needed another new one. We only bought my new one in December so could have really done without paying for two cars at the same time but we both work so far apart, public transport doesn't really work for our places of work and when you throw in juggling school/childcare with full-time employment, we took the plunge.
The universe gave us a high five on the decision by having his old car break down on the motorway with the kid in the back on the last day before we picked up the new one. The engine had seized so it was straight to the car recycling/breakage centre for it and just after I went and picked them up we got a call saying the new car was ready to collect a day early!
Karma people...

The final bit of news - there's a lot this week, isn't there? - we welcomed two new beasties to our family this weekend!
Two adorable little Roborovski dwarf hamsters!
The little dude has been desperate for a hamster for years but we put him off until he was old enough to care for one (or two!) properly. This weekend, he asked to buy himself a hamster with his Easter money. So, I went to the pet store to buy cat litter and came away with cat litter and two hamsters plus all their associated stuff.
The kid might have bought the hamsters with his Easter money but we bought the cage, food, toys and all the other bits. I think we got taken for a ride, lol. They're adorable though. I'll get pictures later today once they settle. (We only bought them yesterday.)

Nothing!
Ok, not true. I finished nothing this week.
I've read little bits of several different books but just can't settle on anything long enough to power through.

I'm in a slump. It's 100% official.
The second one this year and it's only April!
😑
Hopefully, it was stress related once more and I'll kick back into gear now it's over!

Amazon Kindle

I forgot to include this last week but I got the Wicked King on sale for only £1.99.
I was very excited.
Maybe, I'll finally get around to reading both this and The Cruel Prince soon...

Freebie

This one was from the Romance Reader Club.
I've never read anything by Jennifer Probst so it's a win. So far, I've had no books that I already own from this so it's definitely been worth signing up.

What's going on with Blog Lovin'??
In the past week, my follower count has dropped from 725 to whatever it currently is... 699?
Flux is to be expected but 26 people in a week seems extreme.
Maybe a cull of inactive/spam accounts?
It's giving me a complex! 😂

GoT! It's back!
I had to sign up for three months of a streaming service I don't use in order to watch the bloody thing but it was worth it!

Beyond GoT, I've been re-watching Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitsu with the little dude and movie-wise we re-watched Aquaman and The Lorax.
It's been good watchings this week.

The entire freaking soundtrack for this show is stuck in my head. Don't ask me how many times I've caught myself humming I Think We're Alone Now by Tiffany... However, this intro was amazing. You gotta love the Phantom of the Opera.

  1. Your work certainly do things differently but I like the idea that you get the chance to be in the job gaining experience and then you get assessed for being suitable. It gives you a chance to learn and grow a bit. I'm looking forward to photos of your new furry friends!

    1. It's all a bit strange with work but it's nice when it comes together in the end!

  2. I bet you have been stressed. What an odd job evaluation system!

Congratulations on the acquisition of your new hamsters. I found at school that the more my hamsters were handled, the tamer they were. I hope that's true for you.

I'd like to invite you to join in at Sunday Salon on my blog each weekend, too. Sunday Salon has been around for about twelve years, but I've just taken over the meme, and I hope to build it up again to becoming a great place to share links and visit other blogs and talk books.

  3. Wow, you're job really runs you through the ringer. Imagine robots going through a system like that.

  4. It's good to hear they are actually paying and recognizing you for the job you do. *applause, applause* My count dropped on Bloglovin too. Maybe they did a clean out? Though, I still see some bot accounts there. *shrugs* I can't wait to see the hamsters! And I hope the new car runs for miles. and miles.

  6. Congrats on passing your test. That's awesome! And congrats on the hamsters! I love hamsters. I used to have a robo, then chinese dwarf and teddy bear hamsters. They are such fun little pets.

  7. Hope your dinner and visit went well, Nicci. It's kind of a non-holiday for us so we're doing the usual Sunday stuff (grocery shopping, laundry, etc). Congrats on the promotion! Well done!! I had a drop in subscribers, too. Maybe 20 or so. I had the same thoughts - like maybe inactive or spam accounts were being deleted. Who knows. Love the Phantom medley!

  8. Happy Easter! I hope you and your family have a lovely walk in the forest. :) Congrats on the promotion!!!! Can't wait to see the pictures of the two new hamsters. They must be so lovely. *.* I'll have to see I've lost any Bloglovin subscriber. I don't have many, so I really hope I haven't. *fingers crossed*

  9. Congratulations Nicci! And yes as you say karma! I noticed that when things break they often do it in a row. Like your refrigerator and drier is you know what I mean... Now GOT, I follow if vicariously through my daughter's viewing LOL

  10. Oh congrats on the promotion! I would have been a nervous wreck too!!! We get performance reviews by our principal every year and I am always a wreck!

  12. Congrats on the promotion and the new car and the hamsters! It sounds like a lot of changes have happened recently. I get HBO mostly so I can watch GoT. It’s probably a waste of money, but I need my GoT! Have a great week!

  13. I wish we had a forest to walk in . . . That sounds so lovely! We did go for a walk around our neighborhood earlier, enjoying the cool weather and smell of the blossoms from the nearby orange grove. It's been a relatively quiet day for the three of us.

Congratulations on the promotion, new car and the hamsters! You have a lot to celebrate!

I feel you when it comes to being in a reading slump. It really stinks, doesn't it? I hope I can pull out of mine soon. I hope you enjoy your new books! I haven't tried either author but Probst and Black are on my must try list.

I hope you have a great week!

Oh, dwarf hamsters are adorable. Heh, that kind of reminds me of my brother and I finagling our way into pets...

Hope the reading slump ends. Wishing you a relaxing and reading-ful week!

  20. My bloglovin stats have inexplicably dropped too so maybe they are culling obsolete accounts?
Can I just say that your work is taking the mickey. Folks should get paid for the job they're doing from when they start, not from when some panel does a review. I guess they're not backdating the raise to compensate? Congrats on getting your due, but ...!!

  21. Congrats on getting the promotion (or the recognition for the promotion to the job you were already doing... how confusing). Glad the new car situation worked out well (even if there was a breakdown involved) and that the new car was ready when you needed it.

Sorry to hear you're in (another) book slump. I've been through a few of those of late. At least you got a couple of interesting new books. I hope you enjoy them (when you're out of your slump).

  22. Congratulations on promotion, husband's car and hamsters!! Enjoy your reading slump! Book blogger always feels pressure about not reading, but we just need it from time to time)))

  24. Yay for your promotion and the new car. Hamsters are rodents? Um probably a no there. We will stick with dogs. Or fish.

I hope your have a wonderful week with some amazing reads! Try a genre change maybe? Or read something you have been dying to read?

    1. Lol, I'd class a hamster as a rodent... I don't mind the bigger ones - Syrians - but these little dwarf things are speedy little ninjas! Luckily, they don't seem to bite. My cats are loving the new additions...

  25. I've had the same issue with Bloglovin' this week! I was like, woah...did I post something THAT bad?!? Seeing as it doesn't seem to be just me (or you) it seems more likely they culled a bunch of inactives. Still.

Congrats on the new car and the promotion! Hope the stress eases up and your reading slump ends soon. :)

  27. Congratulations on your promotion and the new car! As for Bloglovin, I wouldn't worry about it. That many people in a month MUST be some sort of purge/cleanup of inactive or spam accounts. And if so, they weren't really "following" at all anymore.

Thank you for posting the Lindsey Stirling Phantom medley! I love that show--like you, I have pretty much the whole soundtrack in my head--and I really enjoyed this arrangement.

  28. Reading slumps are the worst!!! I really enjoyed The Wicked King and I loved Jennifer Probst’s Marriage to a Billionaire Series!!! Congrats on your promotion, new car, and hamsters!!!!

  32. Congratulations on the promtotion!! YAAY!!! Also to your hubby and the new car and yours for that matter. I hope all is well. We had hamster years ago. They say they only last two years (we had dwarfs) one lasted 2 years to the day and the other about 2/3 months later. They are cute as heck. Good luck with them. Now we have Guinea Pigs and they say they can last up to 7 years I think we have had one set (girls) 2 years and the other set (boys) a year now.
