This week, I've been on leave from work, my mum is visiting, and so we've been out and about day-tripping to various places with the little dude and it's been lovely!
The professor was in Colorado for work and brought back a load of American candy and cookies that we can't get over here (or that we prefer from the US) so I'll be spending next week in a sugar coma.
😋

Folks! Be proud!
Ancient Magic was an audiobook!
Not only do I feel I deserve a 'well done' for actually listening to an audiobook from start to finish (because it was a first) I really deserve a well done because I straight up lost my shit so many freaking times with the god-awful abomination of a Scottish accent the narrator voiced for one of the characters. I'm serious, it was beyond awful. So awful, I was going to return the bloody audiobook but refrained. After a while, I think enough blood had built up in my ears that I became numb to the torture.
However, the audiobook I bought was the five book audio boxset, aka the complete series.
I just don't know if I can bear to listen to that accent again... I may finish the series by reading the ebooks. Or I may be so mentally scarred by the accent that I never again read this series for fear of it popping back into my brain.
I also read these with the little dude.
It was Bout of Books week!
Kiddie's Corner: Mini Reviews of Children's Books
Blog Tour & Review: Blood Cure by KA Linde
Can't Wait Wednesday: Magic Triumphs!

I'm on the blog tour for Storm of The Gods by Amy Braun and I loved that book!
I'm also taking part in the release blitz for 10 Reasons To Stay (the arc I mentioned above) so if you're curious about it pop back on Thursday!
Think I'll also be taking part in Top Ten Tuesday which has a back to school prompt but I'm still working on that post at the moment...
So sorry the narrator's poor accent ruined that audiobook for you. With a good narrator, audio can almost be better than reading. Fingers crossed you try again - maybe with a different series?
ReplyDeleteI've had some good narrator recommendations so we'll see what happens. :)
DeleteOh, it's interesting to read your thoughts, since I loved Ready Player One so so much.
ReplyDeleteHaving a week off from work is always great.
And I wish you lovely time eating the candy!! 😸
Thank you!
DeleteI love that you even want to eat candy from here, because I remember reading a very unflattering article about American chocolate. Maybe you are not eating the chocolate? I wish we had more honeycomb in our sweets. That was something I really liked when I was over in your neck of the woods. Honeycomb ice cream - YUM!
ReplyDeleteLol, in a battle between American chocolate and British/European chocolate I think we win hands down but I wouldn't say American chocolate is bad; It's just different.
DeleteI LOVE Three Musketeer bars (they were brought home). I also quite like the Baby Ruth bars... Your Milky Way bars are just like our Mars bars (I can't tell the difference) and your Snickers are no different either.
If you like honeycomb, you should try a Crunchie. It's basically a bar of honeycomb covered in chocolate. Leaves you twitching from sugar overload but it's yummy!
I hope you've been enjoying your visit with your mom! I don't get to see mine nearly enough. And have fun in your sugar coma! XD Oh no!! I always wonder how bad the audiobook accents truly are. I guess it's good that I don't know the difference. Haha! Enjoy your new book and have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI don't see my mum all that often either! I live in the south of England now and she's still back home in Scotland. I typically see her a couple of weeks in the summer and at Christmas. It sucks but we always make the most of the time we have. :)
DeleteOh no..poor accents in a narration are the worst! And for your first listen. Kudos for finishing it, I hope the story was good and look forward to your review. Yay for candy and cookie comas..enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI don't listen to audiobooks...so I can avoid horrible accents!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sold on that book about an Open Marriage...some of us tried it back in the day, and it doesn't usually end well.
Thanks for sharing, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
I'm not fond of audiobooks but so many people love them and seem to get so much done while listening to them that I really want to make them work for me (and like them) but over a year of 'trying' later and I'm still not a convert... Tempted to give up! lol
DeleteI hope you have a good visit. Oooh candy. What kind did you get?
ReplyDeleteKeebler Rainbow Cookies (we love them), Three Musketeer bars, Skittles & Starburst (yours are different flavours to ours), some jelly beans, Airheads and sour watermelon thingies. :)
DeleteI just couldn't read 10 Reasons to Stay. I'm sure I'd get ticked at the couple for sleeping with other people. How can that not affect your marriage in a negative way? Jealousy and resentment would surely doom the relationship. I've had to stop listening to an audio book and read by e-book instead because the narration was ruining the story for me. Sorry to hear you got 5 books of that! I'd return it.
ReplyDeleteI want to see Ready Player One sometime. Glad to hear you're having some nice family time! :)
I have such a hard time listening to audio books, one because I can't focus and two because I hate when a girl does a guy voice. It totally throws me off.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy all the yummy candy :)
Have a great week, Nicci! Happy Reading
Mmmm candy!!! I am in a sugar coma after this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI meant to say something more...sugar coma...coma...sugar *reads post again*
Right, audiobook! Ugh, a bad accent can ruin it all
OK, I am sorry but I LOL at "I really deserve a well done because I straight up lost my shit so many freaking times with the god-awful abomination of a Scottish accent the narrator voiced for one of the characters. I'm serious, it was beyond awful. So awful, I was going to return the bloody audiobook but refrained."
ReplyDeleteSometimes it works out that they can't get it right but I don't hold it against the book. Have a great week of reading!
Mary my Sunday Roundup 33!
Sometimes audio books can be ruined with a bad narrator. Sometimes I'll end up just reading the book. Hope you are enjoying your family time. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteEeesh. That's why audiobooks are hit or miss for me. I much prefer when there are two narrators to a book that way they can handle accents and various roles without them either all sounding the same, or sounding like garbage. Sorry to hear that this author botched the characters for you. :(
ReplyDeleteYay for being off work and visiting with your mum. I hope you're all having a great time. I haven't seen the movie Ready Player One - or read the book - but yeah, some movies are just a bit too long!

That's great that you're having such a great time with your mum. I still need to watch Ready Player One. I loved the book but missed the movie when it was at the theaters.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your sugar coma. I’m already looking forward to Halloween because I want candy. I hope you have a great week! Enjoy your new book.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Mmmm, sugar coma! It sounds like you had a lovely, relaxing week :)
ReplyDeleteOuch! That's terrible that someone's God-awful accent can ruin a series for you like that. Maybe wait a while for the sounds to recede in your memory a bit and then start with the ebooks.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Ready Player One yet but I'm looking forward to it after loving the book. I'm a bit iffy about Mamma Mia 2 as I'm annoyed at the death plot. I guess I'll see it when the dvd comes out.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good week! I still need to see Ready Player One but I did see Thor: Ragnarok. I thought it was fun. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday, have a super week!
I am absolutely positive I commented yesterday morning (I even remember typing it) but now I don't see it anywhere. Very strange. So, take two...
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun week off work and the day trips with your mom sound lovely.
What fun to get all the American treats! What's your favorite?
Ugh, a bad narrator/bad accent can totally ruin an audio book. Shame it happened on your very first one. Hopefully it's doesn't put you off audio books completely!
As much as I loved Mamma Mia, I just haven't felt led to see Mamma Mia 2 for some reason. Maybe I should give it a go.
Hope you have a wonderful week!! :)
